LGBTQ SURVEY
You are invited to participate in an academic study examining the social and political attitudes and behaviors of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals. As not much is known about the LGBTQ population in the United States, it is important to capture attitudes and behaviors in order to determine if there is indeed a distinctive culture that has the ability to wield social and political influence.

NYABN is passing this request along for the lovely and talented Brooklyn author and multi-media artist Audacia Ray who is looking for a few good interns! Could one of them be you?
The time has come! After much encouragement from my friends and colleagues, I've decided that it's high time I looked for some interns to assist with my various projects, which are growing rapidly.
Although I'm sure I could keep a single intern busy for many many hours a week, I'm asking for 4-6 hours a week from a few different people to work on a variety of projects. Though these are unpaid internships, there may be a possibility for paid opportunities in the future - and unless otherwise specified you can do the job from anywhere, all it takes is a computer with connection to the internet and a phone. I'm also willing to work with you to get college credit in the spring semester as well if you want to take on more work.

this letter & accompanying article sent to us from the New England LGBT Veterans
Friends,
Today is Veteran's Day. After what happened in the House Wednesday (ENDA Passes House Without Trans Protections), I don't feel much like wanting to be an American any longer. I'm not even going to march in the Atlanta Veteran's Day Parade with the other GLBT veterans as I planned.
( read more about America's Forgotten Veterans in an article by Ms. Monica Helms, president Transgender American Veterans Association )

Since the mainstream media has seen fit to overlook this important topic we have chosen to X-post this this letter & accompanying article to honour both Veteran's Day/Remembrance Day (November 11th) as well as Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20th). Perhaps you might also wish to do the same and pass it on down the line.

The holidays are usually a time for people to head home or reunite with family and friends, but for some of us going home is not an option. As such BiRequest will be organizing a Thanksgiving gathering in the city for whoever is interested in joining us on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 22nd) from 3:00pm to whenever . . . .

ENDA is the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and if passed it would extend federal employment discrimination protections that are currently provided on race, religion, gender, national origin, age, and disability to cover both sexual orientation and gender identity.
Many people who hate and fear the LGBT Community do not want this bill to pass. They are spending big bucks and working tirelessly against it.
Recently some well-meaning but we feel ultimately misguided people agreed to drop the protection for Transpeople to try to get more votes.
NYABN along with many other people and groups feels this is wrong.
We do not want to sacrifice our friends to gain some advantage for ourselves. We would prefer to fight on for another 30 years than do that.
-----
Read a statement by Wendy Curry, President of BiNet USA about this topic & where the Bi Community stands.
Completely confused (as we are!) about why a few members of our own community and some of our purported "srt8 allies" don't support equal rights for all LGBT people?
Read "Conventional thinking about why trans people won’t be in ENDA, courtesy Rep. Rob Andrews" from "Forked tongue and a dirty house" by Kate Forbes.
Sign an on-line petition to Speaker Nancy Pelosi asking her to please make sure that (ENDA) includes transpersons

According to some recent articles includig this in the Orlando Sentinel: "For a number of gay bars, it's last call" and another one in the business mag Entrepreneur: "10 Businesses Facing Extinction in 10 Years" what was once one of the mainstays of LGBT community is going the way of the dinosaur.
The culprit is said to be the growing casual acceptance of LGBT people in American culture by those of bar-hopping age combined with the "graying" of LGBT population who came of age when a stop by the local Lesbian Bar, the Gay Dance Club, etc. was the only social outlet where people could feel safe.
I knew that the inclusion of LGBT materials in the big chain book-stores (both on and off-line) had caused the demise of many small LGBT book-stores, but it did not occur to me that it would also hit the bars. I had somehow assumed that the Cubby Hole, et. al. were forever.
But on the other hand this certainly fits in with what Peter Tatchell has been saying for ages, especially in many of this Queer Theory columns.
