[NYC Tri-State Area]: The NYC LGBT Center is looking for a few good people

The New York Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Services Center is a nonprofit organization serving the LGBT population of New York City and nearby communities. Established in 1983, the NYC LGBT Center has grown to become the largest LGBT multi-service organization on the East Coast and second largest LGBT community center in the world.

The Center is located in the heart of NYC's historical West Village "Gayborhood" at 208 West 13th Street, in an historic building which formerly housed the High School for Food Trades. Every week, 6,000 people visit the Center, and more than 300 groups meet in the building. These groups range from political activist organizations to social clubs. The Center also frequently hosts speeches, performances, workshops, and commercially sponsored information sessions. Additionally it has a generous Membership Rewards program to encourage and thank the members of the community who support the Center.

The Center also houses Y.E.S., the Youth Enrichment Services. This organization provides services and support for queer and questioning youth. Programs such as both a young men's and a young women's discussion group, a gender exploration group, a safe schools network, and a variety of support groups are available to youth free of charge.

The Center's Gender Identity Project (GIP) works to foster the healthy development of transgender and gender non-conforming people, partners, family and community. Through the delivery of a range of transgender-driven supportive services, advocacy, outreach, education and capacity-building, the GIP creates a safe and productive atmosphere for community-building, wellness and self-care, and leadership development.

Another important part of the Center's mission is to host and document the artistic and historic contributions of members of the LGBT Community. This includes the Center’s museum program, including the Campbell Soady Gallery that provide space for artwork that celebrates the diversity of LGBT life and supports the work of emerging queer artists. The Center is also home to the National Museum of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender History, a repository of manuscripts, personal papers, organizational files and records of the Center itself.

Since it's inception in the early 1980's the Center has also hosted a number of long-running Groups including Bi-Perspective and BiRequest as well as numerous special events specifically for the Bisexual, Fluid, Pansexual and Queer-identified community and in 2001 it further acknowledged the Community when it officially changed it's name from the Gay and Lesbian Center to the current LGBT Center by adding "Bisexual" and "Transgender" to it's name.

They currently have a need for Volunteers, they have Student Internship Opportunities including some that come with a small stipend and openings for Full-Time/Part-Time Employment. The current paid jobs include:

[NY State]: what you don't know about State Senator (& Reverend) Ruben Diaz Sr may hurt you

Note: This information is X-Posted from the most excellent Blabbeando a truly worthwhile blog. These two interviews with the father and son of an important and powerful New York family were done in Spanish on "Pura Politica" which airs on one of the local NYC Cable-news channels NY1 Noticias.

It would be our supposition that the knowledge and skill of Juan Manuel Benitez, the show's anchor and the fact that the interviews were in Spanish caused both New York State Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz Sr. and perhaps even Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. to be slightly more umm . . . "unguarded" we might say? . . . than they might have been on a less local or perhaps an English-language news outlet.

Then Andrés Duque the author of Blabbeando took the time to actually translate the whole interview and to provide subtitles in English as annotations to the YouTube videos in order to make them available to a wider audience. So here is the entire fascinating saga that Andrés Duque has uncovered:

Last month I posted a YouTube video of an extraordinary interview that was broadcast on "Pura Politica" - a weekly Spanish language political interest show that runs on the NY1 Noticias cable channel - in which Juan Manuel Benitez, the show's anchor - grilled homophobic NY State Senator (and Reverend) Ruben Diaz, Sr. on his views on marriage equality as well as the separation of church and state.

Turning the Reverend's own arguments against him, Benitez got Diaz to admit that he believes that homosexual relations are akin to bestiality and that he believes that there is no such thing as separation between church and state (tell that to those who say that the Reverend is not really homophobic and that gays would love him if they got to know him a little better).

I took some time to actually translate the whole interview and to provide subtitles in English as annotations to the YouTube videos in order to make them available to a wider audience. What I didn't expect was for Benitez to go on air a week later and thank me for the effort and actually feature of an image Blabbeando on the NY1 Noticias (more on that at the end of this post).

The interview with Diaz, Sr. ran on June 24th, the Blabbeando kudos ran on July 3rd, and - researching the NY1 Noticias site for the latter - I found out that Benitez also interviewed Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. on July 12th! Jr., as you will probably not be shocked to hear, is Sr.'s son.

Call For Submission: Bisexual Artists

Bisexual Artists is seeking artists who identify as Bisexual (or with a label inclusive of bisexuality, such as Pansexual, Fluid, Omnisexual, Ambisexual or Queer), to submit paintings, drawings, photographs, prints, or sculptures relating to their experiences of living as a bisexual person. This project is an opportunity for artists to represent what being bisexual means to them and to help promote the wide variety of people who are bisexual.

Hangable works will be limited to 8' in height and 6' in length. Sculptures will be limited to a base of 2' by 2', with a height no greater than 8'. Works may be either pre-existing work or work created specifically for the event. There should also be a paragraph description of the content of the work and how it relates to issues of bisexuality, bisexual identities and/or bisexual visibility (no more than 500 words).

Artists selected for the exhibition will have their work on display in the San Francisco art gallery of Good Vibrations on Polk Street from Thursday October 8th 2009 thru Thursday, November 26th 2009.

[Op-ed] Are Bisexuals the glue that holds Poly together?

I have been having this conversation with some folk about polyamory and bisexuality. The short story is that there was a question as to whether it was rare to see relationships of two men and one woman, and why that is the case?

While there were many responses to that question the observation was made that in a situation like that where there was two men and one woman, it would be easier for the group to be str8 because of the fact that one woman can easily handle two men. But in the reverse situation where there were two women and one man, it would be advantageous for the women if they were bisexual since the man will probably be incapacitated at some point leaving both women longing for more. At this point in the conversation, someone made the comment that while bisexuals aren't necessary to whole poly relationships together, they certainly do help. That got me to thinking.

In most poly situations I know of, the folk ARE bisexual . . . . but that may be because I am bi and therefore have a natural affinity for bi community. Perhaps the majority of poly folk aren't bisexual, I don't know. That's why I am posing this question.

Are Bisexuals the connection that makes triads, and quads, so common? Not to say that we are needed for poly relationships, but if you remove the bisexuals from the equation . . . . would the numbers of poly community be drastically reduced or just unnoticeably reduced?

The Member Services Manager reports to the Director of Membership and works closely with other regional and national development staff to ensure that Lambda Legal's individual supporters receive the best "customer service" possible.

Responsibilities
Member Services is responsible for ensuring that Lambda Legal donors at all levels are acknowledged promptly and receive the information and service they need. Utilizing email, phone, snail–mail and the website, the Member Services Manager works with the entire development team to expose members and potential donors to a wide range of Lambda Legal materials, events and volunteer opportunities. This work is aimed at assisting engaged donors to become more involved with the organization, both as financial supporters and as issue activists.

This position is responsible for developing and expanding existing member services programs to provide access to desired information, keeping members engaged in Lambda Legal's work, and guaranteeing that members' concerns/questions are handled correctly and professionally. In particular, the Member Services Manager will be responsible for the acknowledgment of all gifts, resolving donation problems, responding to questions and queries from members and the public, and performing research for solicitation purposes. In addition, the Member Services Manager participates in a variety of membership events, from brainstorming and development to execution. Because Lambda Legal's fundraising efforts are structured around teamwork and flexibility, the Member Services Manager may be called upon to assume responsibilities outside of his or her areas.

Utilizing the existing structure of donor relations (i.e., Justice Fund, Liberty Circle, "Partner Circle," new members, etc.) The Member Services Team will identify appropriate opportunities to engage all donors in the "culture of Lambda Legal". This work will ideally assist in strengthening existing loyalty to Lambda Legal as well as cement new loyalty (and increased giving) with new donors.

Qualifications
Minimum of two years development experience in an annual giving program. Outstanding written communication and interpersonal, and administrative skills required. Ability to work well as part of a team in a high-paced environment. Database operations experience with a high level of computer skills including knowledge of Excel and Word, Raiser's Edge and Convio email client highly preferred.

Compensation
Salary is commensurate with experience within the guidelines of the Lambda Legal salary scale. Excellent employer paid benefits package including medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance and generous employer contribution to retirement account. Generous vacation.

Most of the Seventh Grade Will Be at the Commitment Ceremony

Sometimes the best news is that a story makes no news.

Chance Nalley, a teacher at Columbia Secondary School, said students kept asking if they were invited to his commitment ceremony. At last he said yes.

In the fall of 2008, the supporters of Proposition 8, a ballot initiative meant to ban gay marriage in the state of California, fell on a lucky break: video of first graders whose class parents had arranged for them a trip to city hall, where they celebrated their female teacher’s marriage to another woman, a ceremony over which the mayor of San Francisco presided. Gay-marriage opponents cried indoctrination, and the ensuing controversy provoked so much outrage that it has been considered important in squashing opposition to the ban. (The California Supreme Court is currently weighing the constitutionality of the proposition.)

In Harlem a week ago, a 32-year-old math teacher handed out slips of paper inviting the entire seventh grade of Columbia Secondary School to his upcoming ceremony, where, the names on the invitation made clear, he’d be celebrating his commitment to another man. The teacher, Chance Nalley, rarely wastes an instructional opportunity but said that, in this particular instance, he wasn’t trying to make an educational statement.

“They kept asking if they were invited,” he said of his students at Columbia, a selective public school that specializes in math, science and engineering. “Originally, I said no. But when I found a venue that turned out to be big enough I said, ‘O.K., you can come.’ I invited their parents, too.”

"Steam is a movie that is charming, heart-wrenching and heart-warming all at the same time. You'll learn about different cultures, different religious beliefs, different ethnic practices and different sexualities. That it was written and directed by a white guy is all the more surprising.

Kyle Schickner, who wrote and directed "Steam," is also out as bisexual. He's been married, and he's been an activist, and he's done movies that have bi themes in them. "Steam" has a bit of a bi theme too, and it got him in a lot of hot water with some of the PC police (that's "politically correct" for those who missed the '80s.)"

[NYC]: Participants Needed For an In-person Study On "Subtle Discrimination"

My name is Yinglee Wong, and I am currently recruiting participants for a study on subtle discrimination. Your assistance will be helpful in assisting psychologists and educators to be aware of how discrimination affects several groups based on their sexual orientation.

I am looking for participants in either the greater New York/New Jersey area who would be able to devote approximately 60-90 minutes for a focus group interview. In order to take part in this focus group, participants should identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer.

Participation would be completely voluntary. There is minimal to no physical or psychological risk involved in this study. There will be no payment for participating in this study, but we will provide you with snacks and refreshments.

Also, it would be a great opportunity for you to discuss these pertinent issues and hear how others may experience similar issues as you do.

Tonight's topic is "BiCurious: The Lowdown on Bisexuality" and all bisexual, fluid, pansexual, homoflexible/hetroflexible and otherwise bi-friendly folks are invited to show up to have a good time and to let the boys know that we're neither lowdown, down low nor just curious!Q-Talk is a late night talk show at the Metropolitan Room with a friendly format much like The View, with cabaret acts interspersed throughout.

Just in case you somehow missed it when it had it's big New York City's Premiere in June at NewFest, you can catch a screening of this award winning new documentary "Bi the Way" on Thursday, November 13th at 7:00 PM at the Pelham Picture House in Southern Westchester County. Synopsis: The iron curtain between gay and straight is crumbling. The Bible belt is being unbuckled. Recent studies suggest that bisexuality is drastically more widespread than we ever thought. And for young people, dating a girl one week and a guy the next is no big deal.

Journeying through the changing sexual landscape of America, the directors of "Bi the Way" investigate the latest scientific reports and social opinions on bisexuality, while following five members of the emerging "whatever generation"— teens and twenty-somethings who seem to be ushering in a whole new sexual revolution as well as interviews with Michael Musto, Dan Savage, and Jonathan Caouette.

Following the screening Producer Martha Shane will be on hand for a Q & A Session with the audience.

BiNet USA is America's umbrella organization and voice for bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, fluid and all other of us "somewhere in between" people, as well as all our lesbian, gay, transgender, "straight but not narrow" and questioning friends and allies.

Founded in 1990, it is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to facilitates the development of a cohesive network of independent bisexual/pansexual and bi/pan-friendly communities; promotes bisexual, pansexual and bi/pan-inclusive visibility; and collects and distribute educational information regarding sexual orientation and gender identity with an emphasis on the bisexual and pansexual and allied communities.

I tend to think of it as being the HRC or the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force for the rest of us. But with a lot LESS money and NO paid staff [yep, it's an all volunteer effort boys and girls and actively looking for more people to help out . . . what can you do to assist your community? We are going to be showing the film "Frida" about the life, the loves and the times of the famous bisexual Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo.

The 2002 biographical film is based on the book Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo by Hayden Herrera and stars Salma Hayek in her Academy Award nominated portrayal as Kahlo and Alfred Molina as her husband, the equally famous Mexican Muralist Diego Rivera.

And we will have lots of lovely Movie Snack Food to nosh on while we watch.
